Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday

Today is the fifth day of Holy Week, also known as Maundy Thursday. The word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning "command." It refers to the instructions Jesus gave His disciples during the Last Supper. This is a deeply significant day for the Christian Church to remember and reflect upon.

Here are the key events that took place on Maundy Thursday:

1. Preparation for the Passover
(Matthew 26:17–19, Mark 14:12–16, Luke 22:7–13)
The disciples prepare the place and the meal, following Jesus’ instructions.

2. Jesus and the Disciples Gather for the Passover Feast
(Matthew 26:20, Mark 14:17, Luke 22:14–16, John 13:1)
That evening, likely around 6 p.m., Jesus and the twelve disciples gathered in the upper room to celebrate the Passover.

3. The Disciples Argue Over Who Is the Greatest
(Luke 22:24–30)
While gathered, the disciples began arguing about who among them was the greatest. Jesus responded, saying, “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.”

4. Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
(John 13:2–17)
Jesus demonstrated humility and servanthood by washing His disciples’ feet. He poured water into a basin and began to wash and dry their feet with a towel wrapped around Him.

5. Jesus Identifies His Betrayer
(Matthew 26:21–25, Mark 14:18–21, Luke 22:21–23, John 13:18–30)
After washing their feet, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” Even though He knew it was Judas, Jesus still included him in the meal. Let us also learn to accept people with grace, just as Jesus did.

6. Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
(Matthew 26:26–29, Mark 14:22–25, Luke 22:15–20)
During the meal, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying,
“Take and eat; this is my body.”
Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and said,
“Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
This moment marks the establishment of the new covenant—the foundation of our Christian faith.

7. The Commandment of Love
(John 13:31–35)
Jesus gave His disciples a new command:
“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples.”

8. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
(Matthew 26:31–35, Mark 14:27–31, Luke 22:31–38, John 13:36–38)
Peter confidently declared he would never leave Jesus. But Jesus told him, “This very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

9. Jesus’ Upper Room Discourse
(John 14:1–30)
Jesus gave comforting and powerful words to His disciples, preparing them for what was to come.

10. Jesus and the Disciples Sing a Hymn and Leave the Upper Room
(Matthew 26:30, Mark 14:26, John 14:31)
After speaking with them, Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn and left the room together.

11. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
(Matthew 26:36–56)
After the Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Overwhelmed with sorrow and knowing the suffering ahead, He prayed:

> “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” — Luke 22:42

This moment is powerful—revealing Jesus’ deep humanity and complete obedience to the Father.

HOLY TUESDAY

We are now on the third day of Holy Week — Holy Tuesday. On this day, several key events in the life and ministry of Jesus are recorded. Jesus once again traveled from Bethany to Jerusalem. Upon reaching the temple, He spent time teaching and engaging in deep conversations with the religious leaders, while also sharing powerful lessons with His followers. Here is a summary of the significant events and teachings from Holy Tuesday: --- 1. The Withered Fig Tree (Matthew 21:19–22, Mark 11:20–26, Luke 21:37–38) As Jesus and His disciples were on their way to Jerusalem, they noticed the fig tree Jesus had cursed the previous day had completely withered. The disciples were amazed, and Jesus used the moment to teach them about having faith without doubt. --- 2. Jesus' Authority Questioned (Matthew 21:23–27, Mark 11:27–33, Luke 20:1–8) When Jesus arrived at the temple and began teaching, the religious leaders confronted Him, questioning His authority. Instead of giving them a direct answer...
